What criteria does a person need to meet in order to be considered a hero?
Divinity(either one or both parents are gods or turned into a god), Dead, and have their memories preserved
Who could become a hero?
Anyone, there were no restrictions. You can’t predict who will be a hero and who will never become a hero, no way of knowing until they are dead
What is the story Helen who became a hero?
She was ugly and became pretty, when she died it was claimed if you went to her shrine your children would be beautiful
Who is Euthymos?
He became a hero and after he died people claimed his dad was the river god, the 2nd line on his statue was scratched out and wrote “he did all these things so that mortals could witness him”
Why is there so many athletic heroes?
People had pleasure in talking about them, people would buy oil scrapped off athletes with a strigil where they believed it would help them
Who is Milo?
Most famous for those living after the Greek world, part of a factory that created top level athletes(Kroton), he dominated in wrestling, imitated Hercules. He never became a hero.
What would Milo challenged people to do?
He would challenge people to remove fruit from his hands without bruising the fruit, and would show off by eating a lot of meat and bread, and drink a lot of wine
What was the story behind Milo?
He came across a tree where someone had driven a wedge through it, so he decided to pull the wedge even further to split the tree in half and his hand got stuck and he was devoured by a beast
Who is Polydamas?
A pankrationist who also liked to show off his strength, He was a hero
What is the story behind Polydamas?
Held onto a chariot and the four horses would be let go and he kept the horses from moving, he died because he refused to leave a cave that was collapsing, he thought he could hold it up
Who is Kleomedes?
A boxer stripped of his victory because he killed his opponent, he became a hero
What is the story behind Kleomedes?
Thought he was treated unfairly so he ripped out the supports of a school and killed many kids, town began to suffer and oracle said to pay honours to him and the problem stopped
Who is Theagenes?
Most famous athlete for ancient Greeks because he was a boxer/pankrationist in the crown games, he was a hero
What is the story behind Theagenes?
After he died, his main competitor went out at night a whipped his statue which fell on him and killed him, they threw the statue in the river and problems occurred, so they brought it back and it cured people
Who is Hercules?
MOST famous athlete, he was a wrestler. He was always wearing the same thing
What is Acrobatics?
People watching one guys just for entertainment, it wasn’t a competitions
What are knucklebones made of?
Ankle bones of sheep, eventually mass produced with bronze. wood, clay
What was an indicator for a desirable girl?
Games of chance and juggling
What is Hoops?
Had stick to keep to hoop rolling
What is a Sphaira ball?
Leather pieces stuck together and stuffed with hair or feathers
What is a Follis ball?
Stitched together leather so tight the ball was inflatable
What is the story of Odysseus?
He gets ship wrecked on an island and passes out, waking up to girls playing a ball games, he was naked and all the girls ran away except the princess who took care of him
What does the love song say?
“once again I’ve been struck by purple sphere of love” talking about ball games because mainly girls played
What is Plato’s Metaphor?
Having a conversational ball game
