What does the Greek word Stephanitic mean?
Crown
What are Stephanitic Games?
The only prizes for these events are crown
What are the 4 Stephanitic (crown) games?
Olympia, Delphi, Nemea, and Isthmia
What Footrace is NOT an olympic event?
The Hippios: “Horse race”
What are all the different types of footraces?
That Stadion, Diaulos: Double flute, The Hippios, Dolichos, and Hoplitodromos
What is The Stadion race?
200 yard race, for 52 year it was the only olympic game, used it as their calendar “they were born 2 years after this person won the stadion”
How can you tell if its Stadion race in a painting?
Legs are at a 90 degree angle
What is the Diaulos race?
400 yard race, they would run to the end and back
How can you tell if its a Diaulos race?
If their legs are slightly lower than 90 degrees and will usually have writing
What is the Dolichos race?
8000-9600 yard race, would run in a circuit NOT back and forth, outside runners would have to run more
What is the Hoplitodromos race? (5th race)
Would run in amour, the shields were called hoplights, and it was more of a military activity
What is a Torch Race?
No connection to olympics, it was a relay race in athens containing 40 young men
What is the story behind The Marathon?
A Greek ran all the way home from the marathon that they thought he wouldn’t win to tell his family that he did, but died of exhaustion
What is the Balbis and Trumpet?
Balbis is the starting and finish line, would say “foot next to foot GO” then the trumpet would start
How can you tell who the referee is in a painting?
He will be holding a stick because if one starts early they will be whipped
What is Kampter(Terma)?
A post in the ground at the finish line that you would have to go around
What is Hysplex A?
1 man holding the ropes so no one would start early
What is Hysplex B?
Rope held by a trigger and when its let got the ropes fall
What is Hyplex C?
They added pillars and marbles
What are the 3 body contact sports?
Wrestling, Boxing, and Pankration
What is Wrestling?
It was the first non-running event, to win by not falling on your back, best 3 of 5 games, to admit defeat you would raise a finger, in painting they would always show the moment of crisis or victory
What is Boxing?
Not a prestigious event, dreams about snakes were good, ones about boxing were bad unless you are a butcher or surgeon, pig skin wasn’t allowed cause its too rough, lift a finger to give up
What are Himantes use for?
To protect the hand
What training equipments were used in boxing?
Heavy bags and equipment to protect themselves
