What is the Athletic Training Complex composed of?
Palaistra, Gymasion, Bath-house, NOT a requirement to have all 3 present
What is the Palaistra?
It surrounds an open courtyard w/covered porches that point inward to the open area
What is an Exedrae?
A room in the Palaistra used for many purposes found in the buildings, which are open and can view the outward to the porches and the open area where people are practicing, there are a series of exedrae
What is an Ephebeion?
A lecture room used to deliver lectures to young men who are just about to become adults, other rooms locations are described in relation to it. eg. room is left of the ephebeion
What is the Gymnasion?
Has 1 wall shared w/palaistra, 2 walls are perpendicular to that wall like a U, and one of them is the Dromos(practice track). Could double as a stadion!
What are the 2 parts of the Practice Track?
Xystos and Paradromis
What is a Xystos?
A covered track. At Olympia it was double the width
What is a Paradromis?
An open uncovered track
What did the 3 walls create in the gymnasion?
An open area for javelin/diskos, Vitruvius said could plant trees or pave a pathway
What are Bath-houses?
They are not found at Olympic, and contain Showers(lion head pours water out), Hip-bath(chairs), Wash-basins(pours water over themselves, CHEAPEST)
What is Herm?
Statue, would have an erect penis which would point at places to offer protection, penis represented power
What does a pillar with a head represent?
Normally would be the head of an overseer/person running the complex
What are the 3 Athen Complexes?
Academy, Lyceum, Cynosarges
What happened to athletic complexes in the Hellenistic Era?
Turned into schools, they would hold classes there. Adults were discouraged from being on the grounds, some forbidden
What happened to education in the Classical Era?
There were no schools, had to hire someone to their home to teach, parents ensured they had the skills to read and write.
What was education in the Hellenistic Era like?
There was a need for public schools, it was publicly funded/run schools, taught kids greek culture so they could maintain it
Who is the Gymnasiarchos?
They run the complex, and is always seen holding a curved cane
Who is the Paidonomos?
They oversee the education, who gets to graduate
Who is the Didakolos?
The teacher, different subjects gets different salaries. Gym gets paid lower than music
Who is the Paidagogos?
The nanny
What are the 2 age groups for the school curriculum
Boy/girls: reading/grammar, athletics, music, singing/instruments
EPHEBE: almost a man 16/17, learned music, infantry drills, archery, painting
How were competitions in the school curriculum?
Held frequently for all students and the community would attend, for ALL subjects
What does the literary source for homosexuality say?
Indicated it was common, married men would have a male lover. Sexual preference didn’t mean much. In the relationship, both parties would provide something for the other.
What does the non-literary source for homosexuality say?
Existed but interfered with education
