What is the Regal Era?
Period where Rome was dominated by kings
What is the Republic Era?
Where kings stepped down and everyones owned it, people voted etc.
What is the Imperial Era?
Rome controlled by an emperor
What is the order of the important eras?
Regal, Republic, and Imperial
What is Etruscan Tombs?
Buried their kings/aristocrats here, found about 250, only 20 in good shape
What happened when Etruscan’s died?
Requested their tombs decorated to look Greek to look more impressive
What is Ludi?
Romans word for games, such as, shows, chariot racing etc
What was unique about Ludi’?
Events would only happen as a promise/thanks to gods.
What are Aedile?
Mid-level Roman officials that ran the Ludi, administrated/funded them
What were Ludi Circenses?
A type of Ludi (oldest in Rome), called the track a circus, located throughout Italy.
What was the Circus Maximus?
The largest Ludi Circenses, first things we seen in Rome archaeologically, would hold the event here, was constantly being renovated
What are Factions?
Businesses w/regards to chariot racing, 4 team league and the teams were called factions
What is a Triumph?
A parade for successful roman military commander, began outside of Rome and celebrate a significant victory
What were the elements of a Triumph?
They are given a special chariot, red face paint, specific clothes, and solider marching in front of them. His enemy will also be represented some how.
What are the requirements of a Triumph?
Had to be a legit victory over an enemy you are assigned to. An official they were in charge of and had to be responsible for ending the war, must kill at least 5000
Who is Fulvis Nobillor?
Defeated Greeks which includes athletes, actors, beasts in his Triumph
What are Venationes?
Animals doing tricks, was entertainments for the Romans
Who are Gladiator Combats?
They are thought to be a fight to the death, but its not. Fight went on until 1 person chose to give up or death COULD happen.
What was popular to do at a funeral?
Have gladiators fight, and a lot of it
What is the difference between Magnificence and Munificence?
Magnificence, you want to magnify and Munificence had to do with repaying something and fulfilling your duties
Who is Sulla?
He declared himself “perpetual dictator”, used his soldiers to impose himself power. Set up public entertainments for people on a grand scale. He was also the FIRST roman to put his face on a coin. He was influenced by Caesar
Who is Pompey?
Protege of Sulla, never named himself a dictator, built the first performance place in Rome. Upper class was against the buildings because they didn’t want to used public funds for people to sit around and scared people would get out of control
Who is Caesar?
Not a protege, he was Pompey’s rival. Started a civil war that led to the Roman Republic’s Demise. He won the civil war.
What is the story behind Ceasar?
He ran for Aedile, he announced he was holding a funeral for his father with gladiatorial games even though he died a while ago. He started his own private gladiatorial school so they capped how many gladiators he could have at the funeral. He owed a lot of people for his campaign, and if he wasn’t successful he’d be screwed.
