A

A

A

A parade for successful roman military commander, began outside of Rome and celebrate a significant victory

What were the elements of a Triumph?

A

They are given a special chariot, red face paint, specific clothes, and solider marching in front of them. His enemy will also be represented some how.

What are the requirements of a Triumph?

A

Had to be a legit victory over an enemy you are assigned to. An official they were in charge of and had to be responsible for ending the war, must kill at least 5000

A

Animals doing tricks, was entertainments for the Romans

Who are Gladiator Combats?

A

They are thought to be a fight to the death, but its not. Fight went on until 1 person chose to give up or death COULD happen.

A

Have gladiators fight, and a lot of it

What is the difference between Magnificence and Munificence?

A

Magnificence, you want to magnify and Munificence had to do with repaying something and fulfilling your duties

Who is Sulla?

A

He declared himself “perpetual dictator”, used his soldiers to impose himself power. Set up public entertainments for people on a grand scale. He was also the FIRST roman to put his face on a coin. He was influenced by Caesar

Who is Pompey?

A

Protege of Sulla, never named himself a dictator, built the first performance place in Rome. Upper class was against the buildings because they didn’t want to used public funds for people to sit around and scared people would get out of control

Who is Caesar?

A

Not a protege, he was Pompey’s rival. Started a civil war that led to the Roman Republic’s Demise. He won the civil war.

What is the story behind Ceasar?

A

He ran for Aedile, he announced he was holding a funeral for his father with gladiatorial games even though he died a while ago. He started his own private gladiatorial school so they capped how many gladiators he could have at the funeral. He owed a lot of people for his campaign, and if he wasn’t successful he’d be screwed.

Who is Augustus?
Adopted by Caesar, defeated all his rivals and became the sole dictator of Rome. His nickname was Emperor, and everyone after him were also called emperor

What is Ludi Saeculares?
Games of the Ages. A 3-day festival

How did Augustus run games?
He didn't just put money in it, but actually took interest and was passionate about the games, unlike Ceasar who didn't care at all

How did Augustus take control over funeral and gladiators?
He had to pre approve of anyone in having a gladitorial show, basically only the wealthy had a right to have gladiatorial combats. He only approved a few people within his circle

What is a Munera Legitima?
A legit funeral, follows 1. animal event in the morning 2. executions at noon 3. the gladiatorial combat
