A

What happened in phase 1 of the building?

A

They built 3 buildings: Heraion(earliest building to Hera, Zeus’ wife, made of wood, eventually replace with marble), Pelopion(5 sided temple for Pelops), Prytaneion(where the city would have a constant fire where sacrifices were made, core of the city)

What is the story behind Pelopion?

A

Pelops cheated in a chariot race to marry the kings daughter by bribing a slave to cut the breaks but instead they replaced the pin that keeps the wheel on with WAX, which cause the king to die, but cursed pelops

A

Elis, rather it was located in Olympia, Athletes would begin the Olympics here, going around the sanctuary, ending the Bouleuterion

A

Carvings that depicting stories: Hercules assigned 12 jobs that were impossible to do, but he was able to do it; cleaning manure from a stable by diverting a river through the stable which cleaned it

A

Most famous piece of art found in TZ, it was HUGE. Zeus is holding Nike - goddess of victory

What happened in phase 2 of the building?
New building including: Tresuries(held offerings made by athletes or one connected to that specific polis), Zanes(statues were set up at the entrance of the stadion to show what the reason was for the fine an who was fined), Workshop of Pheidias(a sculptor who over saw construction), Bouleuterion(where Olympic council would meet). Had 2 baths: running water and bath tub

What happened in phase 3 of the building?
Began after ATG, New buildings: Exedra(fountain w/running water, nymphs were water creatures), Gym, Leonidaion Hotel(free)

Like a porch, for people to rest that carries an echo

Delphi is at the foot of a mountain and not in the southern part of Greece but in the north, Olympia is just land and is located south of Greece

2 famous boys taking their mother to Delphi but couldn't use the ox so they pull their mother themselves from Olympia to Delphi

What is Peribolos?
Scared land to Delphi, had an oracle, people lived here all year, became kinda like a city but it wasn't independent, run by 12 tribes

What is the story behind the Isthmian games?
Palaimon and his mother's abusive husband wanted to kill her, so they wanted to flee from him and as they fled the mother jumped into the sea and the father followed, they both died

A sanctuary, troops would pass through and sometimes overrun by armies, not much remains

A boy was never allowed to touch the ground or he'd die. A nurse set him down on a celery tree and a snake killed him
