year 394, the year before christians closed down all non christian building/made them into buildings which ended the games
When was Olympia rediscovered?
In 1776, when excavations picked up around this time as well
Who is Pierre Coubertin?
A french nobleman who developed the idea of holding athletic contests, claimed that youths weren’t being vigorous/manly enough so he was competitions w/athletes from all over europe
What is the International Olympic Committee?
They met to discuss how they could go about “refashioning the Olympics”
What did Coubertin struggle with?
He wanted competitions to be “paneuropeanism”, meaning all europeans. At the time people had little interest in sports, people thought it was something you wouldn’t do anymore as an adult and it was hard to sell. He didn’t receive any attention from press or society
What is the Olympic victor list?
A list of winners from the Olympic events, it was questioned because was too neat and worked too well. When they weren’t sure of something they would say “the accomplished __ when they were 40” or if they didn’t know their age “40 years before something significant they did” etc.

Mound for burying important people and become a focus point of respect for that person - found in Olympia

Worship being given to Zeus at Olympia in the black mound

A pentagon shaped structure around the tumulus which suggest that its associated with the tumulus

Silver medals were given per event instead of crown of olives
What are some important dates for modern Olympics?
First women participated and events were held anywhere that was available, then they had 3 medals, later on Olympics were cancelled, they then added the flag and oath as well as an opening ceremony and there was a purpose behind the games, added seasonal games, added olympic flame, had an olympic village, had first torch race, had closing ceremonies, had a mascot, and then started branding
What was the purpose of a Citizen Woman?
To provide offspring for her husband
How did the Greek culture preferred these women?
Marry after 1st menstruation, virgins, possibility of adultery was limited
What are some rules for a citizen woman?
They were veiled when they were outside, but were usually just indoors to limit contact with other men and if men came in the house they would go upstairs and men were only allowed if the husband was there, men and woman weren’t allowed to dine together.
Who are Hetaras?
A non-citizen women would be a mistress and they could never be wives, usually foreigners, its not adultery cause they were citizen women
What is the literary evidence of citizen woman?
If women were mentioned it meant she was unusual and she has done something really good or bad
What is best thing you can say about a woman?
Nothing, if nothing is said, she has fulfilled her role
Why should we be skeptical of literature?
It’s biased so it doesn’t prove anything
Who is Atalanta?
A mythical character who is a top notch athlete (clothed) and equal to men, she never married, she was able to track down a bore. She said she would marry who ever could beat her at a footrace but if they lost they died.
Who is Hippomenes?
The only man to beat Atalanta and married her

He prayed to the goddess of love to help him beat her who gave him 3 apples to throw her off as she ran. He forgot about his promise to the goddess and she turned them into animals to pull he chariot
