What happened with ATG’s successors?
They couldn’t get along so they fragmented his empire, and 3 big empires emerged
What are some facts about ATG’s father?
He used athletic comps to make himself appear more Greek when trying to make a connection with them
Why did ATG not compete?
He said he wouldn’t unless it was against his “peers”, other kings
What did ATG do when went on military campaigns?
He held competitions regularly, his commanders would bring a wagon full go goat skin to create a tent to run footraces etc
What was the story of Dioxippos and Koragos?
Argued about who’s was the better competitor, held a match where K was in armour and D was half naked and D won
What were schools like during Hellenization?
Similar to Ephebia in Greece but schools weren’t about learning your own heritage, it was about learning Greek everything
How were the Isostephanitic Games during Hellenization?
They were equal to the stephanitic games
What does Hellenistic mean?
“greek like” or related to Greece

What are the Sebesteia Games?
It took place at Kaisereia Sebaste, in Israel, city refers to the holiness of Caesar
What was the Maccabean Revolt?
Jewish high priest who encouraged young people to get Greek citizenship, learn language and participate in athletics, but Jews were troubled etc. Revolt was triggered by growth of athletics, being naked was RIDIC
What were some perks for athletes?
Crown as a prize, polis’ offered them stuff, in Athens there got paid, inscription of tombstones
What is Galen’s opinion on athletics?
Its stupid, if you want to know what’s the fastest, horses will beat humans every time, animals should compete and have their own games. It also doesn’t promote overall health, but takes a toll on it
What was the story about the Trainer?
Bystander were watching a young boy wrestle and applauded him, but the trainer hit him w/ a stick and said if the audience is applauding you’re probs doing something wrong
What does Galen think of Managers?
They aren’t managers they’re salesmen
What are athletic unions and guilds?
Originally referred to as brotherhoods, but now called Xystos.
What evidence do we have of unions?
Gravestones, if you died you would at least have a decent burial and a funeral would be provide in your honor
What is a Guild?
A group of people working together to promote a common interest, were always professional, not just a brotherhood
