What does Desultores mean?
Leapers but they would jump from horse to horse, a spectacle NOT a sport
What was the Romans opinion of Greek sports?
It was something they watched and not participated in
What does Infames mean?
A latin word for ‘unspeakable’, a legal term that meant one who had certain restrictions upon their rights as a citizen
What qualifies you to become an Infames?
If you performed in public for pay. Almost all athletes were considered infames
What are the Romans opinion on the Athletes?
They thought boxing was the most interesting and wrestling the least interesting. People would leave wrestling events to go elsewhere.
What is Caestus?
A roman boxing glove, gave more protection in the forearm, thicker around the knuckles
What was it like for women in Rome?
Romans gave women more freedom than Greeks did, women could attend any event, occasionally have their own seating section.
Who is Nero?
An emperor who was fond of greek culture, built a gym, entered 1606 events and did a tour. Also set up his own event so he could compete at them called Neronia and he won all 1606
What did Nero’s body guards do?
Hired clappers and had to clap as long as the other clappers, STORY: a women went into labour and still couldn’t stop clapping

A ball the Romans had that was inflatable and stitched together

A ball the Greeks used
What are ball games like in Rome?
Ball games were worth while, a good leisure activity.
What did textbooks say about ball games?
They would help if you felt sluggish or tired, good for peoples health

They were often associated with women,

‘12 lines’ each side gets 15 pieces and you move it by throwing a dice
What is Ludus Latrunculorum?
‘Game of Theives’ objective was to take your opponents pieces of trap them, NO DICES, men played

‘Knucklebones’
What was gambling like?
It was ok to gamble but not be a pro gamblers
What is the legality and morality of gambling?
Was extra legal, you are not restricted from doing it but couldn’t have a lawsuit related to it. You would get ridiculed for doing it a lot
What is their opinion on cheating?
Lowest of LOW, you are not fully a man
