Who were Free Agents?
All athletes, could compete for any polis as long as they recognized them as a citizen
Did Greece have dual-citizenships?
No, but could say “this year I’m going to this polis, and next year a different polis”
What was significant about the polis “kroton”?
Disproportionately churned out athletes, 20/71 winners of the station footrace was from here, “jock factory”, people would try to poach these athletes
Who is Askalalos?
He was an athlete from kroton, and was taken to syracuse, so he lost his proton citizenship, so they turned his house into a prison
What was significant about the polis “syracuse”?
Went beyond hiring free agents, hired musicians and poets etc
What was the relationship between athletics and propaganda?
Athletics were used for propaganda to enhance reputation of a community
What is the story of ‘The Curse of Moline’
Hercules lead soldiers in a battle against elis, the eleans were going to the isthmian games and Hercules killed them. The sister(moline) of the boys who were killed, went to the community they died in and told them to punish Hercules but they said nah, so she cursed anyone from elis that competed in the isthmian games. No eleans have won.
What is the rival between the Macedonians and the stephanitic games?
Macedonians were upset they couldn’t compete even though their close relation to Greeks, set up their own games on mount Olympus and no greeks paid attention to it
What is the rival between the Cyberus and the stephanotis games?
Cyberus’ were wealthy and made a comp w/ the same prize and put it was the same time at the Olympics, they were unsuccessful
What was the biggest ban?
During the Peloponnesian war, Sparta against Athens, every Greek polis took a side/forced to, Olympic games still took place during this war.
What happened in the year 420?
Spartans were fined for competing in the olympics by elis, ‘spartans violated the truce’. Spartans refused to pay, so they were banned from competing/entering the sanctuary.
What did ATG’s father do when gained control of Greece?
Get himself the right to compete at the olympics, said his ancestors were god and he set up statues of him and his family and gained the right to supervise the pythian games
How did calendars work in Greece?
Each community had their own calendar, eventually use olympics to base their time off
What was the First Calendar?
Published at the olympics, wasn’t exactly 365 days, each polish would add/subtract a day every 4 years
What is the Mimesis?
Its a non-greek art piece
What is a Kouroi?
A boy, they are statues usually at temples or gravesite, not athletic statues, nudity wasn’t seen anywhere else
What is a Diskobolos?
A discus thrower, became so popular it was imitated and duplicated
What is a Diadoumenos?
‘Ribbon-tying’, an athletic winner, tied a ribbon on your head when you win
What is a Diskophoros?
‘Discus-bearer’
What is a Apoxymenos?
‘scrapping-off’, just finished working out and scrapping off oil
What is the Hellenistic Terme Boxer statue?
‘end of the boxer’ shoulders slumped down and seem fatigues w/ wounds on his face.
What is an Epinikian poetry?
Poetry writing on someones victory, winners would hire someone to write about their victory
What is Pindar, Olympian Ode 7?
One of the supreme poems he wrote, called olympian, nemean etc, depending where they won’t. sings the song infront of the man and his family
What is Pindar Pythan Ode 8?
Talks about what it’s like to be victorious for a little bit, says it will pass.
