Measuring sleep Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are gamma waves responsible for?
Cognition, learning, memory, and decision making.
What can too many gamma waves cause?
Anxiety and stress.
What can too few gamma waves cause?
Depression and learning disruptions.
What are some physiological indicators used to identify altered states of consciousness?
Heart rate, body temperature, eye movement, muscle movement, brainwaves.
What are some psychological indicators used to identify altered states of consciousness?
Content limitations
Normal: Clear, controlled thoughts
Altered: Weird, random, messy thoughts
- Attention (controlled vs automatic tasks)
Normal: Can focus and multitask well
Altered: Hard to focus or do tricky things
- Perception & cognition
Normal: Senses and thinking are clear
Altered: Things look/sound strange, thinking is slow or jumbled
- Emotions
Normal: Feelings match the situation
Altered: Mood swings or no emotion
- Self-control
Normal: In control of body and actions
Altered: Clumsy, do silly or risky things
- Time
Normal: Time feels right
Altered: Time feels too fast or slow
Are physiological indicators subjective or objective data?
They are largely objective data.
Are psychological indicators subjective or objective data?
They are more subjective data.
what is an electroencephalograph (EEG)?
EEG = E for Encephalon (brain)
Detects, amplifies, and records electrical activity in the brain using electrodes attached to the scalp.
Different types of brain wave correlate to different states of consciousness, so we can use an EEG to determine which state of consciousness a person might be in.
What is an electromyograph (EMG)?
Detects, amplifies, and records the electrical activity of the body’s muscles using electrodes usually attached to the jaw.
what is an electro-oculograph (EOG)? O for Ocular (eyes)
detects, amplifies and records electrical activity of the muscles surrounding the eyes.
Is physiological sleep data from EEG, EMG, and EOG quantitative or qualitative?
Quantitative.
What are the five types of brainwaves?
Gamma, beta, alpha, theta, and delta.
What are gamma waves associated with?
High-level cognition, learning, memory, and decision making.
What are beta waves associated with?
Alertness, concentration, and active thinking.
What are alpha waves associated with?
Relaxed wakefulness, calmness, and resting state.
What are theta waves associated with?
Light sleep, drowsiness, and deep relaxation.
What are delta waves associated with?
Deep sleep and restoration.
What is a sleep diary? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
A sleep diary is a self-reported record of an individual’s sleep, including estimated sleep time and quality.
Advantages: Easy to use, low cost, provides insight into the sleeper’s personal experience.
Disadvantages: Subjective, may be inaccurate, relies on memory and honesty.
What is video monitoring? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
Video monitoring uses cameras and audio to record a person while they sleep.
Advantages: Captures real-time behaviour (e.g. sleepwalking), non-invasive, useful for diagnosing sleep disorders.
Disadvantages: Can be intrusive, does not measure internal processes, may be expensive.
