Metabolism Flashcards
Define metabolism
Chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life
What is a catabolic process?
Breakdown of molecules to produce energy
What is a anabolic process?
Use energy to create larger molecules for growth and maintenance
Where is energy derived from?
Chemical bonds
What bond is broken in the ATP - ADP cycle
Phosphodiester bond between the beta and gamma phosphate groups
What is the official SI unit of food energy?
Kilojoule
What is one kcal? How many kJ’s does 1 kcal equate to?
Amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1 degree Celsius.
1kcal= 4.2 kJ
How many units in a oligosaccharide?

What is the general formula of a carb?
(CH2O)n
How many units in a polysaccharide?
10-1000’s
How may essential amino acids are there?
9
What is an essential amino acid.
One we must obtain through our diet as it cannot be produced in the body.
What are conditionally essential amino acids?
Required when there is a high demand for amino acids for example during pregnancy or puberty
Arginine, cysteine and tyrosine
What are lipids composed of?
Triacylglycerols
3x fatty acids esterified to 1 glycerol
What are the fat soluble vitamins?
A, D, E,K
What are linoleic acid and linolenic acid needed for?
Prostaglandin synthesis
What does a deficiency of b12 result in?
Anaemia
What does a deficiency in vitamin D result in?
Rickets
What does a deficiency in nacin result in?
Pellagra
Think 3 D’s- diarrhoea, dementia and dermatitis
How much is the recommended intake of dietary fibre?
18g/day
What does RNI stand for?
Reference nutrient intake
What does EAR stand for?
Estimated average requirement
What does LRNI stand for
Lower reference nutrient intake
What does the BMR do?
Maintains resting activities of the body
