What is the central nervous system?
the brain and spinal cord
what is the peripheral nervous system?
sensory motor neurons that connect CNS to rest of body
What are nerves?
bundled axons that form neutral cables connecting CNS to muscles, etc.
Explain the three types of neurons?
1) Sensory - carry incoming info from sensory receptors to CNS
2) motor - carry outgoing info from CNS to muscles/glands
3) Interneurons - w/in brain and spinal cord. communicate internally and intervene between M/S
What 2 components make up the PNS motor neurons
1) Somatic NS - voluntary control of skeletal muscles
2) Autonomic NS - controls glands and muscles of internal organs. ex) (para)sympathetic NS
What are neutral networks?
short and fast neural connections
What are spinal reflexes?
rapid, automatic, and involuntary motor responses
What is the endocrine?
body’s slow chemical communication system
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers that are made by endocrine glands and affect our tissue
What are adrenal glands?
they sit above the kidney and secrete hormones that help arouse the body during stress
What is the pituitary gland?
regulates growth and controls other endocrine glands
