Flashcards in MOD 9.1 - Neoplasia 2 Deck (6):

What is metastasis?

The development of secondary malignant growths at a site distant from the primary site of cancer

How can metastasis travel to other sites?

- Through blood

- Through lymph

- Grow directly into the surrounding tissue

What is invasion of a metastasis?

- Cells pass through the basement membrane and extra cellular matrix

What is tumour burden?

- The number of cancer cells, size of a tumour or amount of cancer in the body

- Invasion + metastasis = ↑ tumour burden

Why does tumour burden not increase with benign tumours?

They don't metastasise

What is tumour dormancy?

Tumour cells are quiescent and therefore do not divide. They wait for an appropriate stimulus for proliferation
