Nutritional needs of athletes Flashcards
(8 cards)
Pre-training/competition
Aim is to keep the athlete from feeling hungry before and during exercise exercise, and maintain optimal levels of energy stores for the activity that follows.
During training/competition
Acts as an alternative fuel source and maintains fluid lost throughout the exercise bout
Post-training/competition
Ingested in a timely manner, aims to optimise recovery following the exercise session
Role of carbohydrates
*It’s the bodies preferred fuel source for high intensity exercise
*Must consume carbs quickly after exercising
Timing of restoring glycogen
If you eat within a hour of exercise you will be 100% recovered
Role of protein
Muscle repair and constructor
Promotes glycogen re-synthesis (helps take it in)
Carbs and Protein together
Benefits
-Increased insulin sensitivity
-Insulin speeds up protein formation
Hydration
The aim is to reverse the amount of fluid that has been lost rheoufh sweat
We can figure this out by weighing our pre exercise and after exercise
