Flashcards in Week 2- Nervous Tissue Deck (4)
What are the functions of astrocytes?
-They provide structural support
-Uptake excess potassium from extracellular spaces during intense or prolonged neuronal activity
-phagocytosis & scar formation after injury
-isolation of nerve terminals from each other
-regulation of entry of substances into interneuronal space
What are the functions of oligodendrocytes?
They myelinate CNS axons.
What do microglial cells do and why are they unique?
They function as phagocytic cells, have monocyte ancestry and make up less than 5% of glial cells.
