What are the 3 basic layers of the immune system?

1. Physical Layer
2. Innate Immune System
3. Adaptive Immune System

1

What TLRs detect Bacterial Infections?

TLR4- LPS (gram negative)
TLR5 - Flagellins

2

What TLRs detect Viral Infections?

TLR9 - CpGRNA
TLR13 - dsRNA
(in an endosome)

3

What is the stratum corneum?

It is made up of dead cells/terminally differentiated/Non-living keratinocytes.
-Make up protective layer of skin
-Cells dry, regenerate, dec. pH, inc. salt

4

What does IL-2 do?

Proliferative - drives T cells to grow & divide

5

What does IL-12 do?

T cell differentiation to Th1

6

What does IL-4 do?

T cell differentiation to Th2

7

What are INF-gamma and TNF-beta?

Proinflammatory - Th1

8

What does IL-4 and IL-5 do?

It helps activate eosinophils & mast cells: force class switch maturation (to IgE) [Th2]
-When class switch is done inappropriately, it causes hay fever
