Week 7- Approach to Anaemia Flashcards
(49 cards)
What is the definition of anaemia
Decreased circulating red blood cell mass
What are the three main mechanisms of anaemia
Haemorrhage haemolysis and decreased production
What are common signs of anaemia in animals
Pale mucous membranes lethargy tachycardia weakness
What does PCV measure
The percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells
What does a low PCV and low TP suggest
Haemorrhage or blood loss
What does a low PCV and normal or high TP suggest
Haemolysis or decreased production
What is regenerative anaemia
Anaemia where the bone marrow is responding by producing reticulocytes
What is nonregenerative anaemia
Anaemia where the bone marrow is not producing sufficient reticulocytes
What are reticulocytes
Immature red blood cells released in response to anaemia
What does polychromasia indicate
Presence of immature RBCs suggesting regeneration
What does macrocytosis suggest
Large RBCs usually due to regeneration or FeLV
What does microcytosis suggest
Small RBCs often seen with iron deficiency
What is anisocytosis
Variation in red blood cell size
What is hypochromasia
Pale RBCs usually due to iron deficiency
What are spherocytes
Small dense RBCs lacking central pallor seen in IMHA
What does haemoglobinuria suggest
Intravascular haemolysis
What does icterus in an anaemic patient suggest
Extravascular haemolysis
What is the most common cause of regenerative anaemia in dogs
Immune mediated haemolytic anaemia
What is the first line treatment for IMHA
Prednisolone and clopidogrel
Why is clopidogrel used in IMHA
To prevent thromboembolic complications
What is the role of erythropoietin
Stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells
What disease causes low erythropoietin and anaemia
Chronic kidney disease
What test confirms regenerative response
Reticulocyte count
What are Howell Jolly bodies
Remnants of nuclear material in RBCs indicating regeneration
