Basics of Prenatal Development Flashcards
(47 cards)
What are the three stages of prenatal development?
Fertilization (germinal) stage
Embryonic stage
Fetal stage
Time frame for the fertilization/germinal stage
2 wks. after conception
Time frame for the embryonic stage
Weeks 3-8
Time frame for the fetal stage
Weeks 9 to birth
What occurs during the fertilization/germinal stage?
Cellular division and implantation
What occurs during the embryonic stage?
Major organ system formation
What occurs during the fetal stage?
Final growth and functional maturation
Define fertilization
Sperm meets egg (forms zygote)
Define cell division
Rapid mitosis
What is created after rapid mitosis?
Blastocyst
Define implantation
When the blastocyst embeds in uterine wall (by day 10)
What are the key events that occur during the fertilization/germinal stage?
Fertilization - Zygote formation
Cell division - Rapid mitosis (forms blastocyst)
Implantation - Blastocyst embeds in uterine wall
What are the key events that occur during the embryonic stage?
Gastrulation
Musculoskeletal/Nervous System development
Organogenesis (other major system development)
When does gastrulation occur?
Weeks 3-4
What does gastrulation consist of?
Development of the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm
What is the purpose of ectoderm formation?
Development of nervous system, skin, and other sensory organs
What is the purpose of mesoderm formation?
Development of muscle, bone, and the circulatory system
What is the purpose of endoderm formation?
Development of digestive tract, lungs, and liver
When does the primitive heart tube begin pulsating?
Around day 20
When does development of the musculoskeletal and nervous system occur?
Weeks 5-6
What are the important components of musculoskeletal formation?
Somites (segment along neural tube)
Limb buds emerge
Cartilage templates form
What are the important components of neural development?
Neural tube closes (eventually become the spinal cord and brain; starts differentiating)
Formation of brain vesicles (different regions of the brain)
When does organogenesis and major system development occur?
Weeks 6-8
What is organogensis?
Stage of development where the body’s organs begin to form (differentiate into major systems of body)
