Biology 5.5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
Terrestrial biomes
Desert, temperate grassland, Savannahs, chaparral, temperate deciduous forests, tropical rain forest, taiga, tundra
Desert
Type of terrestrial biome. Extreme temperature fluctuation (cold night, hot day), < 10 inches rain per year, organisms adapted to conserve water, vegetation includes cactus, sagebrush and mesquite
Temperate grassland
Type of terrestrial biome. Cool winters, hot summers, lower temperature than Savannah, 10 to 30 inches of rain per year, fertile soil, animals have long legs to out run their predators
Savannahs
Type of terrestrial biome. Very dry season, very wet season, very low rainfall, animals include ungulates (hoofed mammals like giraffes)
Chaparral
Type of terrestrial biome. Wet winters, dry summers, scattered vegetation
Temperate deciduous forests
Type of terrestrial biome. Cold winters with snow, warm summers, animals include squirrel, fox, deer, vegetation includes beech, maple, oaks, willows and leaves are shed
Tropical rain forest
Type of terrestrial biome. Torrential rainfall, rain forests, jungles, consistent hot temperature, very little light reaches ground so saphrositic vegetation occurs there, vegetation includes thick vegetation, leaves not shed, epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants)
Taiga
Type of terrestrial biome. Coniferous forests, long cold winters with snow, largest terrestrial biome, animals include moose, bear, wolf, vegetation is spruce only
Tundra
Type of terrestrial biome. Very short summer with cold winters, support minimum vegetation with deeper layers containing frozen soil (permafrost), little precipitation, lichen, moss, animals include polar bears and oxen
Aquatic biomes
Largest biome. Organisms include photosynthetic algae which are responsible for most of atmosphere. Includes freshwater biomes, saltwater biomes and estuaries
Freshwater biomes
Type of aquatic biome. About 3% of all liquid on earth. Low salt concentrations
Saltwater biomes
Type of aquatic biome. About 97% of all liquid on earth. High salt concentrations
Estuaries
Type of aquatic biome. Areas where freshwater streams or rivers merge with ocean
