Neurodevelopmental disorders
A group of psychiatric conditions that emerge during childhood and are characterized by abnormalities in the brain’s development
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Short attention span, distractibility
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Disabilities in language, social interaction, and inability to understand another’s point of view
Schizophrenic Spectrum Disorders
A group of mental health conditions shown by psychosis, has hallucinations and delusions, and other symptoms like disorganized thinking and speech
Delusions
Persistent, false beliefs that is not influenced by evidence or reasoning
Negative symptoms
Absence or reduction of normal behaviors, thoughts, and emotions (in schizophrenia)
Positive symptoms
Symptoms that are added to normal behavior or thoughts (in schizophrenia)
Delusions of persecution
False belief that one is being harmed
Delusions of grandeur
False beliefs about oneself being important, powerful, or having special abilities
Word salad
A type of severely disorganized and incoherent speech (schizophrenia)
Catatonia
A state characterized by rigid or bizarre muscular movements (schizophrenia)
Flat affect
A diminished or absent emotional expression
Catatonic stupor
A state of reduced reactivity to the environment
Dopamine hypothesis
Suggests that schizophrenia is linked to an overactivity or excess of dopamine in the brain
Depressive disorders
Mental health conditions characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest
Major Depressive Disorder
A mood disorder with persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities
Persistent Depressive Disorder
A chronic form of depression with a low mood and other symptoms, lasting for at least two years
Bipolar disorders
Characterized by extreme shifts in mood, ranging from periods of intense mania to periods of depression
Cycling
The frequency and length of mood episodes in bipolar disorder
Mania
Elevated mood, energy, and activity in bipolar disorder
Bipolar I Disorder
More severe mania, symptoms are prominent and more intense
Bipolar II Disorder
More severe depression, symptoms are shorter and less intense
Anxiety disorders
Mental health conditions characterized by excessive fear and anxiety
Acrophobia
Fear of heights
