PARALLEL INSTALLATION
- Both new and old systems are operated in parallel until new system is sufficiently proven
Pro: if new system fails, old one carries slack
Con: Expensive to run 2 systems simultaneously
PILOT OPERATION
- New system operated in limited capacity until proven and then is fully phased in as the old system is phased out.
Pro: Costs and risks are low; staff can be trained in stages.
Con: Not necessarily representative of full system operation; only after new system is fully phased in will problems become apparent.
COLD TURKEY
- In one swoop, new system is moved in and old one is moved out.
Pro: Fastest and potentially least costly.
Con: Most risky and raises issues about when the staff will be trained / what will happen if the new system fails
