Coordination and Control Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the 2 parts of the nervous system
Central Nervous System (CNS): Brain + Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Nerves
What are receptors
specialized structures that detect stimulus
What are effectors
respond to stimulus
What are reflexes
quick automatic responses to perceived threats
What is the reflex pathway
Stimulus (heat)
Receptor (in skin)
Sensory neuron
Spinal cord (relay neuron)
Motor neuron
Effector (muscle)
Response (pull hand away)
What are the 3 types of neurons
Sensory-Carry impulse from receptor to CNS
Relay-In spinal cord, connect neurons
Motor-Carry impulse from CNS to effector
What is stimulus
A detectable change in an organism’s internal or external environment that triggers a response
What happens when you’re hot
Sweat,blood vessels widen (vasodilation)
What happens when you’re cold
Shiver, vessels narrow (vasoconstriction)
