Excretion Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is excretion
The removal of waste products of metabolism from the body
What 4 things does excretion remove
Carbon dioxide
Urea
Excess Water
Salts
What are the 3 organs of excretion
Kidneys
Lungs
Skin
What does the kidneys remove
urea, water, salts
What is the function of the kidney
Filter urea from blood
Balance water & salts (osmoregulation)
Control blood pH
What is the structure of the kidney
Cortex – outer layer where filtration start
Medulla – inner layer with loops & tubules
Pelvis – collects urine
Ureter – carries urine to bladder
Bladder – stores urine
Urethra – carries urine out yuh body
How is urine formed
Filtration:
Blood pressure forces water and small solutes from the blood in the glomerulus into Bowman’s capsule, forming the initial filtrate.
Reabsorption:
Essential nutrients and water are reabsorbed from the filtrate back into the bloodstream, primarily in the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) and the loop of Henle.
Secretion:
The nephron also actively secretes certain substances (like H+ and some drugs) from the blood into the filtrate to be excreted in the urine.
Excretion:
The final filtrate, now containing waste products, is excreted as urine.
What is dialysis
A procedure that cleans your blood when your kidneys can no longer filter it properly. Machine used to clean the blood then returned into the body
If kidneys dont work what do patients do
Dialysis or Kidney transplant
What is Homeostasis
A state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive and function correctly.
what is egestion
The process of removing undigested food and waste material from the body, primarily through the anus
What does Antidiuretic hormone [ADH] do
Regulate water balance and blood pressure
