Red Blood Cells Flashcards
(5 cards)
How does the shape of red blood cells make it carry out its function
Biconcave disk shape-makes them small which make it easy for them to go through some blood vessels like capillaries
Gives them a large surface area to volume ratio which makes it easier for substances like oxygen and carbon dioxide to get into and out the cells
It has a cell membrane made of a protein called spectrin which make the cell membrane flexible
what is the name of red blood cells
Erythrocytes
What is hemoglobin made up of
A large molecule made up of 4 proteins molecules called globins.Alpha 1,Alpha 2,Beta 1,Beta 2 and heme groups
What is diastole
when the heart relaxes and refills after contraction.
What is systole
when the heart muscle contracts, pumping blood out of the heart and into the arteries.
