What are the Purser’s responsibilities during muster duties?
The Purser takes notes of the emergency as it happens and writes up minutes after each drill.
Where is the Purser’s muster station during an emergency?
The Purser’s muster station is the bridge along with the Captain and second officer.
What information should the Purser record during an emergency?
The Purser should record the position of the vessel, time of the alarm, type of emergency, vessel status, number of guests and crew, muster status, fire team deployment, boundary coolers, search party, watertight integrity, and a timeline of events.
Why is a timeline of events important during an emergency?
A timeline is crucial as it may be used in a court of law if needed.
Who gives the debrief after a drill or emergency?
The debrief is given by the Chief Officer or Captain.
What should the Purser do with the notes after a debrief?
The Purser should write up all minutes in a document for filing and inspection by the DPA/flag state.
What should the Purser collect if the Captain commands to abandon ship?
The Purser must collect all crew and guest passports, crew’s SDB, cash, last port clearance, a copy of the Ship’s Registry, emergency checklist/notes, and a lifejacket stored in the office.
What additional assistance is the Purser expected to provide during an abandonment?
The Purser should aid the second officer with grab bags (flares, Epirb, SART, etc.).
What should the Purser do in the event of piracy?
In the event of piracy, the Purser will muster with the rest of the crew in the Citadel.
What tools can the Purser use for note-taking during an emergency?
The Purser can use a blank page of A4 paper or checklists within the SMS, but must navigate quickly around them.
