Who is usually responsible for the upkeep of emergency numbers?
The Chief or second officer is usually responsible for the upkeep of emergency numbers.
It could also fall to the Purser as part of the Safety Management System (SMS) tasks.
Where should local emergency numbers be posted?
Local emergency numbers should be posted in the crew area, the Captain’s office, bridge, ECR, Purser’s office, and any other necessary places.
What are some required emergency numbers?
Required emergency numbers include:
- General shore-based emergency numbers (112 for Europe, 911 USA, 999 UK)
- Port emergency VHF number
- Local police department
- Local fire department
- Local ambulance department
- Local hospital
- Local doctor and dentist (English speaking)
- Harbour master contact number
- Yacht medical emergency number 24/7
- DPA contact details
- Captain’s mobile number
- Instructions on how to call emergency numbers on a satellite phone.
Where can the required emergency numbers be obtained?
All the required emergency numbers can be obtained from the agent, except for the numbers on board, which can be obtained from the SMS folder.
