Ova are released from the follicles 2-3 days following initiation of LH surge

Ovulated ova are not ready for fertilization (must complete Meiosis 1) and therefore are not fertilized until day 4-7 following the LH surge

Signs of impending parturition

- Nest building
- restlessness and seeking quiet, out of sight areas
- Relaxation of pelvic and abdominal muscles is a consistent sign of impending parturition

Parturition
1st stage

-Average 4 hours (6-12 hours)
- Cervix dilates
- Bitch uneasy, refuse food, pant, vomit
- And frequently look at flank

2nd stage

-Visible straining of bitch in the sitting position
-Placental membrane will break and there will be fluid discharge from vulva
- After start of labor first fetus can't be expected to survive more than 6 hours
- Fetuses should be delivered within 2 hours of each other

Passage of fetal membrane should take 5-15 minutes
