FPC: childhood immunizations Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is a ‘go along to get along’ vaccine archetype?
Parents who don’t question vaccines and do vaccinate their kids, but may lack vaccine knowledge.
What is a cautious accepter vaccine archetype?
Parents with minor concerns about vaccines but who still vaccinate their kids.
What is a fence-sitter vaccine archetype?
Parents with significant concerns about vaccines and may accept some or all vaccines or may refuse or delay vaccines. They may be knowledgeable about vaccines and may not trust their provider regarding vaccine info.
What is a refuser vaccine archetype?
Parents refuse all vaccines for their child.
Where can you make the most difference in terms of vaccines?
Cautious accepters or fence-sitters.
How did COVID impact vaccine opinion?
Lead to politicization of vaccines, and increased vaccine hesitancy.
What has happened to vaccine exemptions?
Increased.
What are some current means increasing vaccine hesitancy?
AI misinformation, mistrust in PUBH post-pandemic, and social media amplification.
How has global vaccine coverage changed?
It has dropped since 2019, likely in part due to COVID.
What are some current trends in vaccine uptake?
Declining timely vaccination, increasing number of kids receiving fewer vaccines than recommended, increasing kids receiving no vaccines.
What vaccination rate do we need for herd immunity against measles?
95%.
Describe the general characteristics of someone more likely to be fully unvaccinated.
White, higher income, more educated, often have full access but refuse.
Describe general characteristics of someone more likely to be under-vaccinated.
Public insurance or uninsured, black, lower income, less educated, likely to be due to system or social issues.
What states do not allow for non-medical vaccine exemptions?
California, Mississippi, WV.
In SC, what vaccine exemption reasons are allowed?
Medical and religious.
How do we address the argument that vaccines cause autism?
Address that this has been debunked, and the timing between MMR vaccines and autism diagnosis only seems linked because of the time that autism itself begins to show up.
Describe thimerosal.
A mercury-based preservative used to prevent bacteria growth in vaccines; it was found to be safe but was removed by the FDA from single-dose vaccines due to population concerns.
What vaccines still use thimerosal?
DTaP and multi-dose flu. It is removed after processing the vaccine but may be present in trace amounts.
What are adjuvants?
Ingredient in vaccines used to help create a stronger immune response.
What is the most common adjuvant?
Aluminum.
What is true of the amount of aluminum in vaccines?
It is comparable to what infants would be exposed to just through breastmilk or formula.
What causes vaccine side effects?
The immune response.
How can we mitigate vaccine pain?
Combo vaccines, tactile stimulation, distraction, sweet-tasting liquids or breastfeeding, topical anesthetics.
How do we mitigate those who are vaccine hesitant due to religious concern?
Encourage them to speak with their religious leader about their concerns.
