Hiatal Hernia

A

Reguritation of gastric acid upward into the esophagus d/t stomach being split into two portions by diaphragm
S/S heart burn, indigestion when lying down
Tx:
- Elevate HOB for 1hr after meal
- Increase amount of fluids with meal
- Increase amount of carbs
- Low protein

Dumping syndrome

A

Grastric contents are dumped too quickly into duodenum.
S/S:
- Drunk (staggering, impaired judgement, labile (all blood gone to gut)
- Shock: cold/clammy, tachy, pale
- Acute abdominal distress: N/V, diarrhea, cramping, guarding, borborygmi
Tx:
- Lower HOB
- Decrease amount of fluids 1-2hr before and after meals
- Decrease amount of carbs
- High protein

A

Flapping of the arms and hands. A sign of hepatic encephalopathy

Management of diverticulosis

A
  • drink plenty of fluids
  • exercise regularly
  • whole grains, fruit, and veg
  • low fat
  • high fibre (low fibre/low residue diet may be used during a flare up/diverticulitis)
