4 Ps of Post Op care
- Promote nutrition and ambulation
- Prevent thrombus formation - early mobilization/ foot/leg exericises
- Preform wound management
- Prevent atelectasis - deep breathing and incentive spirometery
Post Op Complications: Urinary Retention
A involuntary accumulation of urine in the bladder as a result of loss of muscle tone. Is usually caused by the effects of anesthesia or opioids and appears 6-8hrs after surgery
Post Op Complications: Constipation
An abnormally infrequent passasge of stool. May be a result of anesthesia or opioid use, decreased activity and decreased oral intake. Failure to pass stool within 48hrs may indicate constipation
Post Op Complications: Paralytic Ileus
Paralytic Ileus is failure of appropriate forward movement of bowel contents. The condition may occur as a result of anesthetics or manipulation of the bowels during surgical procedure. Symptoms include vomiting, distention, and little to no BS. The nurse should maintian NPO status until BS return

- Obtained by surgeon
- Nurse can witness signature, and can call surgeon for additional instructions/education if needed
