Immunity Flashcards
(10 cards)
Sjorgens Syndrome and Tx
A chronic autoimmune disorder where moisture producing glands are attacked by WBC causing dry mouth, eyes, throat, skin, and vagine
Tx: treat symptoms: sugar less gum, lube, regular dental appointments, lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid decongestants and irritants (caffeine, alcohol, nicotine)
What is Systemic Lupus Erythemathosus (SLE)
When the body’s immune system produces antibodies that attack the bodyis tissues and cells. It has flares and remissions
What is scleroderma and its complications
Scleroderma is the overproduction of collagen causing thigtening and hardening of skin/connective tissue
Complications: renal crisis, malignant hypertension, raynaud’s, pulmonary fibrosis, heartburn, and dysphasia
S/S of SLE
- Butterfly rash on face (usually related to sun exposure)
- oral ulcers
- Can affect skin, muscles, joints, kidneys, heart, lung, blood vessels and CNS, chest pain on inspiration, photosensitivity, pancytopenia (
Complications of SLE
- Lupus nephritis: inflammation of kidneys d/t vascular inflammation
- Pleural Effusions: inflammation of pleural tissue causing a build up of fluid
- Vasculitis and increased presence of procoagulant antibodies: increased risk of DVT
Tx for SLE
- NSAIDs
- Prednisone
- Hydroxychloroquine (reduces immune activity)
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis
Chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and damage to they synovial joint.
Tx: methotrexate, NSAIDS, Glucocorticoids (prednisone)
How is OA different from RA
OA is not autoimmune and has a shorted period of morning joint stiffness
What is Malignant Hypertermia
A rare, inherited life threatening reaction typically to anaesthesia but can also be triggered by stress, heat, trauma.
Causes muscle breakdown, rhabdo, and extreme fever
Tx: dantrolene
What is Steven-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic epidermal necrosis
Immune mediated skin reaction caused by abx, allopurinol, anticonvulsant, NSAIDs, sulfasalazine.
S/S: start with flu like symptoms 4-28 days after exposure then developes into rash with blisters. If rash >30% of body it is considered toxic epidermal necrosis
