Its irritates the meninges and the newborn can take on the opisthotonos position (hyperflexed back bend)

Pertussis

A

Aka whooping cough. A very infectious bacterial infection with a cough so strong it can cause vomiting, rib fractures, apnea, and bleeding.
- The cough sticks around for 6-10 weeks
- Pt no longer contagious after 5 days abx

Very contagious diarrhea causing virus S/S - watery stinky diarrhea lasting 5-7 days - fever - vomiting

Super contagious, easily preventable (vaccine) viral infection. - Airborne - give vit a to prevent deficiency that can cause blindness

- cool liquids and soft foods - abx course - discard tooth brush 24hrs after starting abx

PC = lice TC= ringworm on head

Impetigo
Highly infectious skin infection caused by strep or staph. Child are contagious 24-48 hrs post abx start - monitor for acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (d/t strep infection)

Developmental Dysplagia of the Hip (Tx, S/S)
When the hip joint socket did not develop properly Tx: - Pavlik Harness: nonsurgical correction that must be done withinn 6 months of birth, worn for 3-5 months S/S (infant) - extra inguinal fold, laxity of hip joint S/S (older than 2-3 months) - limited hip abduction, limp, walking on toes

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Childhood musclar dystrophy - no cure, usually pass away by 30 - onset 2-5 years S/S - gower sign (pushing on thighs to stand) - enlarged calves - tiptoe walking

Non-progressive, permanent motor and postural disorder caused by brain damage

Hydrocephalus
Increased ICP from obstruction of cerebral spinal fluid S/S - bulging fontanella - increased head circumference - sunset eye (visible sclera above iris) - vomiting - headaches - bradycardia - widened pulse pressure

Bacterial Meningitis
Inflammation of meninges S/S - fever - high pitched cry - poor feeding and vomiting - nuchal rigidity - bulging fontanelle

Birth defect where the spinal cord and the meninges never fully close - sx needed - apply sterile gauze and put in prone position
