Flashcards in Growth Disorders Deck (23):
1

Neoplasia

New growth

2

Neoplasm

Abnormal mass of tissue which is uncoordinated of normal tissue

3

Tumour

Was inflammation now neoplasm

4

Cancer

Malignant tumour

5

Oncology

Study of neoplasms

6

What are the two basic components of a growth

Parenchyma- rapid growth of neoplastic cells
Stroma- bv connective tissues supportive network

7

What is a benign tumour

Grows by expansion innocent and amendable by surgery

8

What is a malignant tumour

Invades and destructs and can spread locally or distant

9

How can cancer mets travel

Lymph nodes
Blood
Epthetlium
Epithelial lined spaces
Seeding or body cavities

10

What are the common sites of mets

Lymph nodes
Liver
Lungs
Brain
Skin
Bone
Endocrine

11

X4 examples benign tumours

Adenoma- glands
Papilloma- finger like projections
Cystadenoma- cystic masses
Polyp- attached to surface may or may not be neoplasm

12

WhAt is leukaemia

Neoplastic
Occurs in haemotietic stem cells
Spills into the blood stream
Malignant always

13

What is lymphoma

Malignant cells in lymphoid tissues
Hodgekins- mixed cells
Non hodgekins

14

What is a teratoma

Mixed cell tumour.
Various cell types and all 3 germ layers
B or M
E.g occur in the ovaries

15

Non neoplastic pre malignant conditions

Chronic inflammation = varicose leg ulcer = skin cancer

Cirrhosis of the liver = heptocellular carcinoma

Chronic ulcerative colitis = adenocarcanoma large intestine

16

Examples of neoplastic pre malignancy

Familial polyposis Coli = adrnocarcinoma

Intra epithelial neoplasia= nuclear changed without breaking basement membrane

17

Cancer grading system

Grade: how bad it looks
Stage: has it spread
T- size
N- lymph node
M- distance to met

18

What is paraneoplastic syndrome

Tumour associated syndromes
Not caused by the tumour or hormone production

19

Endocarditis

Non endocrine cancer
In the small lung can cause Cushing syndrome

20

Hypercalaemia

Caused by bone reabsorption

21

Neuropathic

Peripheral neuro pathways
Cerebellar degeneration
Myopathy

22

Thrombic disorders

Thrombophlebitis migration
Carcinoma of bronch

23

Mucoculaneous

Acanthosis high
Dermaomysis
