    • allowed US to intervene in Cuba to restore peace
    • Cuba was not allowed to sign a treaty with a foreign power
    • the U.S. can maintain a naval base in Cuba

  • they wanted presence in the Caribbean
  • the Foraker act: gets Puerto Rico a limited degree of popular government (a voice) ; treaty of Paris also helped

  • we wanted access to their elite goods
  • the open door policy: able to trade with China
  • boxer rebellion bc China felt used so they rebelled ( china loses)
