It’s very important to be curious in an interview for 3 reasons:
- you get the answers people want
- Uncover the interesting parts of stories
- Helps prevent lazy thinking

It is very important for the interviewer to get off on the right foot by:
Reminding the subject who you are and why you want the interview
You should begin the interview by:
Including routine get acquainted questions that the subject should not have difficulty answering
During the interview make sure to take notes and look up often
Taking notes are important because:
1) gives you a record of what you said
2) it helps you to be a better listener
3) work as a checklist for the questions you have answered
handling sensitive questions with care:
1) Wait until you subject mentions the sensitive subject… when this happens make sure to follow up gracefully
2) if the person doesn’t mention the sensitive topic… wait till the end of the interview to ask it
3) make sure to be persistent
ways to be persistent:
- To rephrase or restate a question
- Ask a question again if your not satisfied with the answer
- Try being silent for a moment
Concluding the interview
1) ask the subject if there is anything else they would like to say
2) Thank the person for his or her time
3) make sure to type up your interview notes as soon as possible
As the subject you should do the following things:
- use your communication skills to your advantage
- be alert and energetic
- pay attention
- get there on time
- make positive points
