John Winthrop is leader, group of Puritains:strict views, nonconformist, formed for religious reasons, will grow and eventually take over the Plymouth Colony, big-time, one of the first colonies to flourish for religious reasons
Jamestown
English colonists out for money, not religion. lots of hardships:environment was negative, worried about Indians. first substantial colony in America that really survives. John smith and John Rolfe are leaders
Pennsylvania
William Penn is founder/leader, Quaker, very diverse population, good relations, with Indians, “city of brotherly love”, design of the town was different (grid)
French and Indian War
French and Indians against England and colonists, England won, west side:Spain, east side:Britain, French is forced to leave, extension of 7 years war, creates tension
Treaty of Paris #1
marks end of French and Indian war, British and colonists relations worsened
Proclamation of 1763
British and colonists, colonists can’t cross the Appalachians because they don’t want to go to war with the Spanish and Indians because they are in debt, colonists don’t like it and don’t understand why, so they start to revolt
Stamp Act
colonists and British, British stamp everything made of paper the colonists had, colonists revolt: “no taxation without representation”, “tar and feathering”, creates even more tension and anxiety
Battle of Saratoga
Americans against British, MAJOR turning of revolutionary war, Americans win, unorthodox tactics (snipers), killing commanders, hiding, France decides to aid Americans! gives us supplies also
Battle of Yorktown
final battle of revolutionary war, Americans win, siege of Yorktown to starve British, French come in from coast to blockade British from getting supplies they need, British feel shocked because they were always “the best”, Americans had more to fight for
Treaty of Paris #2
ends revolutionary war

- Florida went back to Spain
