Whiskey Rebellion
American govt puts a tax on whiskey, people rebelled, Washington tells the people that they have to obey the govt, this isn’t Britain

defines what the branch is supposed to do
Federalist Party
first political party that favored the national bank, strong centralized govt, constitution, distrust individuality:Washington, Adams, Hamilton
Democratic-Republican Party
second political party that favored state govts, trust individuality
XYZ affair
incident in which three French diplomats bribed American diplomats to see their foreign minister, Americans never see the foreign minister
Alien and Sedition Acts
people begin to dislike Adams, if someone speaks out about govt they go to jail or get deported, people think their freedom of speech is being taken away
Midnight Judges
right before Adams left office he elects these judges to gain federalist control, doesn’t work
Louisiana Purchased
huge swath of territory that Jefferson purchased from Napoleon Bonaparte for $15 million, doubles LA size
Lewis and Clark’s mission
- find northwest passage (it wasn’t really there)
- document the geography, animal and plant life
- meet and make peace with the natives
Marbury vs. Madison
establishes judicial review, gives Supreme Court power to declare legislation unconstitutional
Causes of war of 1812
impressment, British were aiding Indians and their weapons
Treaty of Ghent
ends war of 1812, doesn’t do anything, even about impressment, battle of NOLA happens after
Era of good feelings
sectional issues, democratic republic thrives
Monroe doctrine
Document that said America would stay in its hemisphere and Europe would stay in theirs, Monroe is head
Missouri Compromise of 1820
Maine is free, Missouri is slave, north of the line with exception of Missouri is slave free
