Lincolns plan
When 10% of the population of the south had agreed to the oath, then the state could become a real state again. Very lenient- DONT GO WITH THIS PLAN
Issues of reconstruction
The question of freed slaves/ no skill or education
South is destroyed/ physically/ much rebuilding/ most battles took place in the south
Johnsons plan
Very weak and lenient/ similar to Lincolns/ so lenient that there was no real percentage that had to pledge/ confederate people quickly put back into power

Not good/ opposite of freedmens bureau/ trying to re establish slavery in the south/ every community had their own sets of laws
Issues around Johnson
Comes into the presidency through assassination/ bad president/ violated the tenure of office act/ spared of impeachment by one vote/ Lincoln was a republican pres and Johnson, the vp, was a democrat/ fought with congress
Scalawags/ caroetbaggers
Scalawags- doing the right thing/ sympathize/ seen as bad by the south because they didn’t want change
Carpetbaggers- did the wrong thing/ came to the south to get rich and take advantage of the poor and struggling
South reconstruction rejection
Black codes/ terror groups/ create an aura of fear/ voting rights were manipulated
Why does reconstruction end?
The compromise of 1877 officially ends it/says that the south will accept Rutherford B. Hayes as the last reconstruction president/ the federal troops had to leave the south in return
Industrial revolution
Rapid industrialization/ many inventions/ less living in the country/ mass production of items
Farmers issues
Feel like they don’t have a voice/ want inflation and higher prices/ in debt and want bimetalism/ RR companies made prices really high for them
Populist party
Try to resolve things/ bring awareness to farmers needs/ 8 hr work day and tax on income, not land

People gave jobs to friends, not those that are qualified/ deranged man wants job in gov for helping man become president/ shoots him over it
Pendleton act
Cleaned up civil service, made elections of qualified people ,ore ideal
Immigration hub
Ellis and Angel island- two places where immigrants came from
Motivation and results of immigrants to the US
Motivations- RR opportunities/ jobs/ escape religious persecution/ lack of farm land/ all around a better life
Results- cities became overcrowded which lead to filth and disease and crime/ tenement houses are bad and settlement houses are good
