Hypokalemia/ Hyperkalemia/ Hypocalcemia Flashcards
(10 cards)
What indicates hypokalemia?
Potassium of <3.5 mEq/L
What would an ECG look like on a patient with hypokalemia?
A depressed ST segment, T wave inversion, and a U wave
What indicate hyperkalemia?
Postassium of >5 mEq/L
What would an ECG look like on a patient with hyperkalemia?
Tall peaked T wave, prolonged PR interval, depressed ST segment
What indicates hypocalcemia?
Calcium <9 mg/dL
What are two manifestation unique to hypocalcemia?
Positive Trousseau and Chvostek sign
What is a positive Trousseau sign?
Occlusion of arterial blood flow elecits carpal spasm
What is a positive Chvostek sign?
Tapping patient’s facial nerve prompts brief facial spasm
How is a Trousseau sign performed?
Blood pressure cuff left for 3 minutes causing the patient’s hand to point downward during a carpal spasm
How is a Chvostek sign performed?
Tapping a patient’s facial nerve to cause a spasm
