Q

Of those cases with metastasis to region LNs (14% of 107) how many affected the mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymphocentrums? How many had had all 3 (MN, Med retro ph., & parotid)?

A
  1. 2% affected the mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymphocentrums
  2. 1% affected all 3 (parotid, med retro & MN)

Q

Why to sample multiple lymphocentrums?

A

The parotid, mandibular, and medial retropharyngeal
lymphocentrums
each receive afferent
lymphatics from particular regions, with some areas of overlap, including the possibility of
contralateral metastasis via lymphatic anastomotic connections.

Q

What were the main differences between this study and the 2002 JVD LN staging of Oral & MXfacial neoplasms in 31 dogs and cats by Herring (and mark smith)

A

2019- substantially lower incidence of regional metastatic disease = 14% compared to previous 35.5%(2002)
2019- 26% of 15 cases with + lymph nodes had NO evidence of mets in MN lymphocentrum versus 56% (54% HAD mets to MN lymph nodes in 2002)

A

FNA to be less reliable in assessing metastasis, reporting 77.2% accuracy in dogs and cats.
