Q

What is serum amyloid A (SAA)?

A
  • One of the major acute phase proteins in horses, a biomarker for systemic inflammation and infection. -Concentration can increase 100- to even 100-fold during systemic disease processes
  • Normal range 0.5-20mg/mL. -Inflammatory disease levels >50mg/mL
  • Values increase quickly and peak at 48hrs, then can return rapidly to baseline in 1-2 weeks.

Q

Main result of study

A

No statistical finding of SAA elevation
Showed that sedation, oral exam, and odontoplasty (w power float) had no effect on systemic inflammation
(normal horses without evid of disease aside from points/ and overgrowths)
