2 = reasoning
what is impression formation
the processes by which different pieces of knowledge about another are combined into a global or summary impression.
- assumes that individuals do not weigh all traits equally when meeting new people
e.g the first time u see someone u dont like them because they did something u dont like
what is good and bad about impression formation
good= rapid and little mental effort : amount of info recieved
bad = biased viewing
some biases in impression formation:
- first impressions count
- memorable info holds more weight
- negative info given more weight
- halo effect
what is the halo effect
u see one good feature and assume its all good

consequences of stereotyping?
- resistance to change
- confirmation bias
- out-group homogenitity
- self-fulfilling prophecy
- prejudice and discrimination

social identity is a meeting point b/w psychology and sociology, what is this
seeing self as a member/rep of a group
note ppl with social identity seek to enhance their view of themselves by hanging out with advantaged groups and avoiding disadvantages groups
what is self-stereotyping
ppl reminded of positive for negative stereotype about their own group, and change their performance to match the stereotype
what is implicit bias

what is introspection
the examination or observation of one’s own mental and emotional processes.
we can see ourselves as a reflection of how we are seen by others, thus labels can become self fulfilling prophecies
