prep for unpleasant procedures Flashcards
approaches to prep:
- communication
- coping skills (active distraction of guided imagery)
- relaxation (diaphragmatic breathing)
- hypnosis (inducing positive expectations)
influences on pain:
- meaning of pain (if people believe pain indicates a problem, pain is perceived as worse)
- anxiety (makes their feel pain more strongly)
- info related to patient can influence psych thus physical experience
patients want to be informed = giving child age appropriate info about surgery can foster trust, reduce uncertainty, correct misconscepttions , minimise distress
what accompanied by spoken information has been found increasingly helpful for patients
written material
- increase patient knowledge
- decrease anxiety etc
written material shouldn’t have jargon, long sentences, small font
what are the 4 sections of info expected on written information for patient
procedural (what’ll happen)
sensory (experience)
behavioural (expected of patient)
outcome
define nocebo
when a patient’s expectations for a treatment cause the treatment to have a worse effect than it otherwise would have.
(negative version of placebo)
what is health literacy
capacity to obtain process and understand health info
explain the approach and avoidance coping styles
approach = information seeking (some patients want to know more the help their thoughts)
avoidance= information avoidance (ignorance is bliss )
hazards of info:
- graphic images
- too much info about complication
- bombarding of info
external vs internal control (coping)
e.g some info not necessary for patient as they are asked about what they prefer as anaesthetic but patient doesnt know about different types so its better for them to decide instea
avoid using high fear words in conversation e.g knife/blade
