What is home field advantage (Social Facilitation) ?
We generally assume that the home team will have an advantage over their opponents. This is due to the large number of positive support, home players feeling more comfortable and no ntravelling needed prior to games
The opposite of this (playing away from home) is Social Inhibition
What are the disadvantages of spectators?
- Poor performance of a team or perceived injustice can cause frustration and violence/aggression
- Increases safety costs/concerns
- Negative effect on participation of younger individuals
- Increased pressure on the performers
The media have reported on many incidents and dubbed hooliganism…

What are the reasons / causes of hooliganism?
- Rivalries in sport
- Hype from the media
- Alcohol/drugs
- Gang culture/mob mentality
- Frustration at officials decisions
- Display of masculinity
Maintaining a positive image is vital to the growth of football. Performers, clubs and the sport itself could lose out on sponsorship deals and commercial impact. New talent and businessed might be put off football if it has a negative image
What are the solutions to hooliganism?
- Ban/control alcohol sales
- Early kickoffs
- All-seater stadiums
- Tougher deterrents (bans, fines, prison)
- Promotion of football as family entertainment
- Education/campaigns
- Better policing and fans segregation
