Who can perform the sports physical exam?
NP. PA, MD, Chiropractor
How long before a scheduled activity should the sports physical be done? Why?
6 weeks, to allow for any follow ups, additional assessments, or do any therapy that is required
Who is at risk for atlantoaxial subluxation? How would you know they had it?
Children with downs syndrome
Ankle clonus, if present must be referred emergently to neurosurgery
If you were assessing a child with pectus excavatum and archaodactly what would you suspect?
Marfan stigmata
What is the purpose of the sports physical?
Identification of injuries or poorly rehabilitated injuries that could be made worse with sports participation.
*apparently the majority of this can be done by getting a good history.
What is the female athlete triad?
Low energy with or without eating disorder
menstrual dysfunction
low bone mineral density
Focus on: diet, how much/how they are exercising (compulsive vs appropriate), menstrual history.
What is the most common condition found in competitive athletes?
Hypertension
Define Primary amenorrhea, secondary amenorrhea, and oligomenorrhea
Primary amenorrhea: no onset of menses by 16 years of age
Secondary amenorrhea: no period for 3 cycles or 6 months consecutively
Oligomenorrhea: Interval between periods id greater than 35 days
What are the common populations who should get a sports physical?
Middle and high school students, college athletes
Participation in: sports, band, dance, ROTC, & cheerleading
What are the components of the sports physical?
Complete history
Full Physical assessment
-Vitals
-Vision/Hearing
-CV/Resp/Neuro/Skin/Abd/HEENT
Posture, Joints, Strength, Flexibility
If a patient is determined to have stage 1 hypertension, what should the recommendations be?
-Recheck in 1-2 weeks
-Lifestyle modifications
—reduce caffeine (assess for OTC meds that cause HTN, alcohol, tobacco, energy drinks etc.)
What are the absolute contraindication for sports participation?
FEVER: Increased risk of heat related illness
CARDITIS: Increased risk of sudden death with exertion
What is considered Stage 1 Hypertension?
Stage 2?
Stage 1: 130/80- 139-89
Stage 2: 140/90 or higher
