What happens in the first stage of the menstrual cycle while the follicle is maturing in the ovarian cycle?

  1. Progesterone causes the endometrium of the uterus to become thicker and softer.

FSH - causes follicle growth on ovary surface

A

What happens during the ovulation stage?

A

The surge in LH causes the release of the secondary oocyte from the Graafian follicle.

What happens during the luteal phase?

A
  1. The corpus luteum produces progesterone and oestrogen.
  2. Progesterone and Oestrogen cause a thickening of the endometrial lining which prepares the uterus for implantation of a potential fertilised egg.

What happens to the corpus luteum if the egg is fertilised during the lateal phase?

A

It’s maintained and so are the progesterone and oestrogen levels. The endometrial lining is maintained and a period does not occur.

What happens to the corpus luteum if the egg is not fertilised during the lateal phase?

A
  1. It turns to scar tissue (corpus albicans), disintegrates and stops producing progesterone and oestrogen.
  2. The endometrial lining is no longer maintained and begins to shed, triggering the next menstruation.
