Unit 2: Population Distribution and Density Flashcards
What are the regions where there are 2/3 of the population living in it?
South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe
What are the four types of places people will generally not settle?
-too dry
-too wet
-too cold
-too high
What is population density?
the amount of people in an area
What is population distribution?
the spread of people in an area
What are the three different types of density?
-agricultural
-physiological
-arithmetic
What is arithmetic density?
total population/total amount of land
-more people = more people living on each unit of land
What is physiological density?
total population/total amount of arable land
What does physiological density indicate?
Higher physiological density = more food needs to be produced
-puts a stress on our environment and society
What is agricultural density?
amount of farmers/total amount of arable land
What does agricultural density indicate?
-the higher the agricultural density, the more manual labor is necessary to make food
-indicates less technology or less effective agricultural practices
