What are the assumptions the model makes?
-all land is flat
-there is one, single market
-all land has equal access to the market
-farmers want to maximize their profit
-all of the land has similar site characteristics
What is at the center of the model?
the market, where goods are sold
What is at the second ring of the model?
dairy farming and horticulture
What is the third ring of the model?
the forest, lumber for homes
What is the fourth ring of the model?
grains/field crops
What is the fifth ring of the model?
livestock/ranching
What changed in the third ring of the model?
the third ring is no longer the forest and another crop or something to meet societies’ needs
How does trade and globalization change Von Thunen’s model?
people can trade and acquire those resources from other places and don’t need it to occupy land
