What is urbanization?
migration of people from rural areas to urban areas
What is a megacity?
a city that has more than 10 million or more residents
What is a metacity?
an urban area with more than 20 million or more residents
Where are many of the most populous megacities located?
core countries
Where will most of the populous mega and metacities be located in the future?
periphery/semi-periphery countries
When is Africa expected to double its population?
2050
What is happening to the birth rate in core countries?
declining, migrating to edge cities and subarbs
What are core countries?
countries that have industrialized and have the most advanced economies
What are semi-periphery countries?
countries that have emerging economies that are industrializing (between core countries and periphery countries in terms of development)
What are periphery countries?
countries that still rely heavily on the exportation of raw resources and are less economically developed
What is a bloomburb?
a rapidly growing suburban city that has developed its own unique idea
What is an exurb?
a settlement that exists outside of a suburban area, but remains connect to the metro area
What are some characteristics of an exurb?
-low population density
-larger lot sizes
-less goods/services
Where do exurb cities get their goods and resources from?
-a nearby boomburb
-a nearby edge city
How do individuals from exurbs work?
they usually work remote from home
What are edge cities?
a settlement that has its own economic district and is located on the outskirts of a city/neat a beltway or major highway
What are some characteristics of an edge city?
-high concentration of businesses
-high concentration of shopping centers
-different goods and services
What does the population density look like in edge cities?
low density, dispersed
What is urban sprawl?
the unrestricted growth and expansion of an urban and suburban area into the surrounding countryside
What is urban decentralization?
the movement of population away from an urban areas traditional core to peripheral areas
What is the result urban decentralization?
power and money shifting more to the peripheral areas
