-when people move from one place to another and take their ideas with them
-does not cause new people to have the idea (same people practicing the idea)
-may cause the hearth to die off

ideas expanding outwards from the hearth

-happens through systems
-typically from sort of power
-may spread from the top down
-does not spread quickly
-does not spread equally

-the spread of an idea from a smaller power to the greater people
